HIC or Humidity Indicator Cards are widely used to measure humidity levels inside a packaged environment. These are generally the cards on which moisture-sensitive chemical is impregnated in such a way that it changes the colour whenever the relative humidity is exceeded. Cost-effective and easy to use, HumiChek® humidity indicator cards are great for determining the humidity level inside any sealed packed product.
These cards are not precision indicators. However, they are good at telling the maximum possible humidity in a container. For example, if all of the dots are deep blue on a 6 spot card which is a 10-60% card, then it means that the humidity in that container is below 10%. This helpful especially in the case of products which are to be protected from rust as basic corrosion occurs only when the humidity level exceeds 40%. The indication of humidity also helps us prevent the products from mildew and fungus
The most common humidity indicator cards change color from blue (less than indicated RH level). They are available in many configurations and used in many applications like metals, health and diagnostic equipment, military equipment, machine parts, tools fixtures, and practically any product which can be affected due to moisture and humidity.
Colour Indication: Blue to Pink
Cobalt Chloride has been used as a humidity indicator for more than 6 decades in HIC and Silica Gel Desiccants
The salt gives a color change indication of blue to pink as it absorbs moisture. But as per regulation of European Commission Directive 98/98/EC (amendment to 6/548/EEC), Cobalt Chloride has been classified as Carcinogen
The latest British Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations CHIP 99(2) now include cobalt chloride in the Approved Supply List (Fifth Edition) for the first time. This regulation came into effect on 1st July 2000, meaning a need for an alternative to CoCl2 as a humidity indicator.
HumiChek-FC is cobalt free Humidity Indicator Cards.
The indicator is a non-cobalt humidity indicator which is not classified as hazardous.
HIC is used only to indicate humidity levels and do not eliminate moisture. For moisture removal, Desiccant sachets are used along with HIC.
